INTRODUCTION
Shanghai Interpreters' Association (SIA) is a professional society, whose members are predominantly interpreters and translators working in foreign-related departments and institutions in Shanghai . It mainly engages in interpretation and translation, academic research and provides interpretation and translation services.
SIA was founded in January 1987. Comrade Jiang Zemin, the then Mayor of Shanghai, sent a congratulatory message on this special occasion. Now SIA has a membership of close to 1000, including many senior interpreters and translators, covering over 30 languages.
Through organizing interpreters and translators from different circles to engage in interpretation and translation and to exchange their experience and research results, SIA aims to improver the professional level of interpreters and translators, better serve Shanghai's reform and opening-up cause and foreign affairs work and play a bigger role in the fields of international exchange and the building of both material and spiritual civilization in the city.
SIA operates under the leadership of the Shanghai Municipal Foreign Affairs Office.
SIA is designated by the Shanghai Municipal Foreign Economic and Trade Commission, the Shanghai Higher People's Court, the Shanghai Intermediate People's Court and the Exit-and-Entry Administration of the Shanghai Municipal Public Security Bureau and other institutions as a provider of translation for documents such as business contracts, instruments and certificates, product brochures and technical materials as well as legal and immigration documents, It also provides interpretation services, simultaneous and consecutive, to international conferences, business talks, visits and tours.
SIA has taken an active part in providing interpretation and translation services for important international events held in Shanghai, including Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) meetings, Shanghai Cooperation Organization Meetings, Shanghai's bidding for the World Exposition in 2010, Asian Development Band (ADB) annual meeting, China Shanghai International Arts Festival, Global Poverty Reduction Conference and Forbes Global CEO Conference.
SIA has English, Japanese and Russian academia groups, which organize lectures and seminars from time to time, Also, it actively participates in national and regional symposiums on interpretation and translation, conducts research on and discussions about the theories, skills and practice in interpretation and translation. In October 2003, SIA successfully hosted the 7 th East China Symposium on Translation in cooperation with relevant organizations in Shanghai . SIA's main publications include Interpreters' Friend and Newsletters.
